"This book offers the first published translation of the contemplative manual Virupaksapancasika, written circa the twelfth century CE, and the commentary on it, Vivrti by Vidyacakravartin. These late works from the Pratyabhijna tradition of monistic and tantric Kashmiri Saiva philosophy focus on means to deindividualize and disclose the primordial, divine essential natures of the human ego and body-sense." "David Peter Lawrence situates these writings in their medieval, South Asian religious and intellectual contexts. He goes on to engage Pratyabhijna philosophical psychology in dialogue with Western religious and psychoanalytic conceptions of identity and. "narcissism," and also demonstrates the Saiva tradition's strong concern with ethics. The richly annotated translation and glossary illuminate the texts for all readers."

In this innovative study of the philosopher Nagarjuna, Nancy McCagney demonstrates that the concept of space ('akasa') in early Indian Mahayana Buddhism is the root metaphor for Nagarjuna's understanding of 'sunyata', or openness. Nagarjuna's use of the term 'sunyata' was new, and contrasted with the word's use in Pali Buddhist literature. By using the word to mean 'openness,' Nagarjuna was able to elucidate, through a deeper analysis of impermanence, a consistent philosophical foundation for the truth and efficacy of Gautama's Middle Way. McCagney's book will be important for those studying Indian philosophy, Buddhism, and the philosophy of religion.

Hindu Bioethics for the Twenty First Century/ S. Cromwell Crawford.    -.Divine Books .Delhi.India (Sri Garib Dass Ayurveda Series)
 - 226 pages  (For Sale in India only)  Rs.600-00
Explores contemporary controversies in bioethics from a Hindu perspective. S. Cromwell Crawford breaks new ground in this provocative study of Hindu bioethics in a Western setting. He provides a new moral and philosophical perspective on fascinating and controversial bioethical issues that are routinely in the news: cloning, genetic engineering, the human genome project, reproductive technologies, the end of life, and many more. This Hindu perspective is particularly noteworthy because of India's own indigenous medical system, which is stronger than ever and drawing continued interest from the West. The Hindu bioethics presented in this book are philosophically pluralistic and ethically contextual, giving them that conceptual flexibility which is often missing in Western religions, but which is demanded by the twenty-first century's complex moral problems. Comprehensive in scope and passionate in nature, Crawford's study is an important resource for analyses of practical ethics, bioethics, and health care.

In this book, Anantanand Rambachan offers a fresh and detailedperspective on Advaita Vedania, Hinduism's most influential and revered religious tradition. Rambachan, who is both a scholar and an Advaitin, attends closely to the Upanisads and authentic commentaries of Sankara to challenge the tradition and to reconsider central aspects of its current teachings. His reconstruction and reinterpretation of Advaita focuses in particular on the nature of

> Abstract: This panel invites papers that focus on South Asian craft
> traditions. It aims to investigate and discuss the role of craft in
> contemporary South Asia, but also the continuity of tradition that

>
> It will be important to address and debate questions of context,

THE 3rd INTER-ASIA POPULAR MUSIC STUDIES CONFERENCE (2012, TAIPEI)*

*CALL FOR PAPERS** Updated! **With Proposal Form and Hotel Info*

*Proposal Deadline: January 31, 2012*

*DATE*: July 13 (Fri) - 15 (Sun), 2012

*VENUE*: National Taiwan Normal University, Taipei, Taiwan

*ORGANIZE**RS:*

*Inter-Asia Popular Music Studies Group (http://interasiapop.org/)

*Graduate Institute of Mass Communication, National Taiwan Normal University

*Department of Psychology, Fu Jen Catholic University

*STATEMENT:*

We are pleased to announce the 3rd Inter-Asia Popular Music Studies (IAPMS)
Conference, which will take place on July 13-15, 2012 in Taipei, in
collaboration with the Department of Psychology at Fu Jen Catholic
University and the Graduate Institute of Mass Communication at National
Taiwan Normal University. Following the first conference in Osaka in 2008
and the second conference in Hong Kong in 2010, we move our next meeting to
Taipei--hub of vibrant indie music scenes and Mandarin pop music industries.

The studies on Asian popular music are still in its embryonic stage. There
is neither a university program in Asia devoted to popular music studies
nor a journal dedicated to the exploration of Asian popular music. What we
have now is an online-based, transnational research portal that began in
2007, the Inter-Asia Popular Music Studies Group, plus a rapidly expanding
research network that at the moment includes 80 scholars not only in Asia
but also in Europe, America and Oceania. The organization is young and
enthusiastic about the rising academic interest in Asian popular music both
inside and outside Asia. There is a growing feeling that Asian popular
music has not received sufficient attention from international popular
music studies and that the existing paradigms of popular music
studies may not be adequate in understanding the culture, economies, and
histories of Asian popular music. The IAPMS biennial conference is meant to
foster scholarly conversations surrounding the emerging field of Inter-Asia
popular music studies.

*CONFERENCE THEME**:*

*WAYS OF LISTENING: **How do we listen to pop music in/from Asia, and how
can we talk about it?***

Pop music lovers, makers, and critics take the activity of listening to
music for granted. Yet it is not always easy to express our/my listening
experiences to others. It is even more challenging to elaborate the social
and cultural implications of the differing responses.

Can the question, "how do we listen to pop music" prompt interest in the
"ways of listening"?

For example, who is listening to Asian pop music? What constitutes pop
music listening? Where does music-listening take place? What activities and
connections accompany the act of listening? How is everyday life organized
through music listening? What personal, social, affective, and
technological experiments have seeped through pop music listening? How do
the recording and consumer's technologies affect the ways of listening in
contemporary and historical Asian contexts? Do musicians and critics listen
to music and do they do music differently from "ordinary" music fans? Can
music listening be creative practices? How are the ways of listening linked
to various moments and results of production? How have listening and
interpretive practices transformed Asian pop music as social distinction,
identity markers, professional knowledge, genres, businesses, and markets?

We invite paper proposals that will investigate, elaborate, contextualize,
and historicize the experiences of listening to (Asian) pop music globally
and/or in Asia. We welcome papers that address moments that open up to
expression and conversation about how people engage pop music. Since this
could be a task beyond the measure of words, we invite you to turn the
thematic question around with an attitude, such as, "Hey! This is how
"we/I/they" action Asian pop music!"

We welcome both individual paper and panel proposals under the umbrella
theme. In addition, we welcome individual and panel proposals for the
following panel themes geared toward publication projects:

-Current issues in Asian popular music studies

-Research methodologies for the studies of Asian popular music

-Pop music, cultural variability and globalization

Fw: [Hinduism] 15 January 2012 - Ponggal the Vedic New Year's Significance

Subject: [Hinduism] 15 January 2012 - Ponggal the Vedic New Year's Significance

The modern science has made it clear that without the Sun, no life can exist on the Earth. In India, the Sun-worship is prevalent from time immemorial. In Vedic calendar, there are 2 solstices. One is the northward movement of the Sun and the other is the southward movement. The north movement starts somewhere in January, hence the most important one as per as the renewal of the world is concerned. It is called the dawn for the God and Goddesses.

With the end of the wet month of Margazhi (mid December to mid January) the new month of Thai (mid January to mid February) heralds a series of festivals. The first day of this month is a festival day known as "Pongal Day". Pongal means the "boiling over" of milk and rice during the month of Thai. This year it starts from January 15th.

People celebrating Pongal should be aware of the meaning & significance of the important rituals associated with this harvest festival. Pongal or Thai Pongal is also called Makara Sankaranthi, since it is celebrated on the first day of Thai when the Sun enters the Makara Rasi (Capricornus). This signals the end of winter and the onset of spring throughout the northern hemisphere. For the next six months, the days are longer and warmer. The Sun begins its journey northward as it transits into the constellation of Makaram (Capricorn), signaling the return of ever increasing daylight and the Sun going to start drive out the darkness...
