I'd like to thank the people on the list who helped me in a variety of ways
over the last couple of years, when I was doing the research for my latest
book. On the list, I was primarily trying to find copies from 1863-1864 of
an English language newspaper called the Daily Shipping and Commercial
News, published in Shanghai. Other than some fragmentary copies in the
British Library, I unfortunately never did locate the dates I needed, so it
remains a real mystery paper (this despite searching in Hong Kong,
Shanghai, Yokohama, the U.S., Australia, and Europe). But in the process I
found lots of other good information!

If anyone is interested, the book is titled _Professor Risley and the
Imperial Japanese Troupe: How an American Acrobat Introduced Circus to
Japan--and Japan to the West_. It's published by Stone Bridge Press (
http://www.stonebridge.com/shopexd.asp?id=369 ) and it is available also at
physical and virtual bookstores. It might be of interest to people
researching early popular culture exchanges, Victoriana, circus, mid-19th
century Japan, and transnational entertainment.
